Early in the free agency period, the Washington Commanders lured Tennessee Titans tight end Chig Okonkwo to the East Coast. He is set to take over the role previously held by Zach Ertz, which is a huge change from how he was used in Tennessee. He recently appeared on the "Grant and Danny" show on 106.7 The Fan to discuss how he landed in Washington and what we can expect from him in 2026.
First, Chig talks about how he came to sign with the Commanders. Then the host asks whether he had looked at Washington before free agency. "They were definitely one of the top teams for me, even before free agency, when I was looking up where I could potentially end up."

When asked who he spoke with and their vision for what he would do in Washington, Okonkwo said, "I talked to [OC David] Blough, [Passing game coordinator David] Raih, and coach [Dan] Quinn. They all just had a vision for me, man, to just come out here and be a playmaker, be explosive, be that spark, be that guy who can run routes, do different things, be a mismatch. Just be a playmaker with the plays I'm given, be super tough when I get the ball on the field, just use my YAC abilities. That's what they're looking for in a guy like me to bring to the offense."
During his four seasons with the Titans, Okonkwo recorded 194 receptions for 2,017 yards and eight touchdowns with just two fumbles. He made some appearances on special teams as well, but those were few and far between.
Okonkwo is set to take over as the starting tight end for the Commanders in 2026, and from what he's saying and from what we've seen on film, Tennessee barely tapped into his potential. If David Blough can tap into the rest of Chig's potential, he could be the next best tight end in the NFL.
