Champions League results: Chelsea, Manchester City exit; Arsenal moves on to Round of 16

Trending 16 hours ago

Chelsea and Manchester City both exited the Champions League on Tuesday night after failing to overcome large first-leg deficits.

After going down 5-2 to PSG last week, Chelsea's Champions League hopes quickly ended following goals by Khvicha Kvaratskhelia and Bradley Barcola in the opening 14 minutes. Liam Rosenior's side had too big of a task trying to come-from-behind against the Ligue 1 leaders and reigning tournament champions.

According to Opta, the losses to PSG mark the first time that Chelsea has ever allowed eight goals over a two-legged tie in a domestic or European competition.

A Federico Valverde hat trick in the first leg put Manchester City in a deep hole against Real Madrid. Tuesday's return leg at the Etihad Stadium didn't see the Premier League side threaten a miracle comeback.

Bernardo Silva handled a ball on the line, which led to his first red card in 104 Champions League appearances. The end result was a goal by Vinícius Júnior and a 5-1 aggregate victory.

At least one Premier League side will be in the Round of 16 as goals from Eberechi Eze and Declan Rice helped Arsenal knock out Bayer Leverkusen. Eze's first-ever Champions League goal kept the Gunners' undefeated run going.

In the day's most stunning result, Sporting overcame a three-goal deficit against Bodø/Glimt to turnaround the tie and move on following a 5-0 win in the second leg.

Luis Suárez’s 78th-minute penalty and Maxi Araújo’s 92nd-minute goal helped the Portuguese side become the fifth team ever in Champions League history to overturn a three-plus goal deficit in a knockout match.

Right from the start, Sporting attacked. They ended the match with 38 shot attempts and 14 shots on goal.
